A lot of movies, having problems with system memory

Post by Dorohedoro »

Hi.

I'm a bit crazy and I've been importing slowly over many years a lot of movies in one file, with actor images as extras.

The problem is I'm having issues running out of memory every time I add more and more movies to the list.

Do you guys think adding more ram to my PC will solve this issue? I'm really worried that one day I will be unable to open this file.

Thanks!

How big is your catalog file?
Maybe it would be better to put pictures as external files instead of having them inside the catalog. This would make that file smaller, and it would load faster (as it won't load all pics into memory).
You can do that via Tools -> Manage Pictures
In call cases, make a backup of your catalog first (and anyway it is something good to do on a regular basis, like any other data file actually :) )

over 1.3 GB, I think this might be some king of record, right? lol. Do you put limits on the amount of movies we can import? because there are more movies coming to my catalog soon (every day I add around 20 movies), I think the catalog will reach over 15000 movies or more in the future.

I was doing that until (I don't know why) I lost every actor image (twice), it was a nightmare my friend, Imagine downloading all of them again. I decided to store every picture on the catalog because that is the only safe way to ensure I never lose the images again.

Do you think adding more ram to my PC will solve this issue? I only have 16GB.

Thank you so much for the reply and for your amazing work.

There is no limit on the number of movies (well, the absolute limit is 2^31-1, but you'll have other problems before) but the catalog being loaded in memory the file should be smaller than the amount of available memory... but as it is 32-bit program the whole program is limited to 2 GB.
The file itself is also limited to 2 GB.
So in your case I'd say you could either split the catalog in multiple catalogs if you really want to keep all images inside it, or use external images but often make a backup so you can go back in case you have an issue with images again (and in general making backups from time to time is a good idea...)
I'm not sure what caused that issue, but maybe you used absolute links rather than relative links, and then moved the catalog and its images elsewhere?

Well that sounds scary lol.

I have followed your advice and changed the storing method, now the files are in a separated folder outside the catalog (as before). I will be more careful from now on and I will backup everything on different locations.

Thank you so much!
