Help catalog missing?

Post by masterchipo »

Again my catalog disappeared or was modified by itself.
Again my catalog disappeared or was modified by itself.
I daily add new movies and update scripts.
Today I am going to use the catalog with direct access to my desktop and it turns out that the last movie added is from October 2018.
It already happened to me once, and our friend @antp gave me the solution, first restoring system in Windows 7, which I did and had no luck. Then with UAC, and I had no luck either, and finally with VirtualStore that I was able to recover on that occasion all the movies seen and added in two years.
This time the missing files were not there.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can fix this? that really makes me bitter as it means a lot of work.
Thank you all :fire:

Have you tried to find a .bak file in the same folder where the .amc file was saved?
(and where do you save that .amc file? If it is in the program's folder it may be the cause of the problem)

The same problem, my friend, that you helped solve that time...
Finding lost files in virtualstore.
C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore (where "<you>" is your username folder), check in the subfolders you may find there.
This time I was not as lucky. He couldn't find the catalog he had used the night before.
I tried with UAC, restore computer, virtualstore, registry, repair, startup, etc. and absolutely nothing. The same information appeared in virtualstore as on the desktop and in "catalog" program files.
Finally and almost by chance and maybe by mistake I try to go to VirtualStore and there I see that there is a difference in ant movie catalog (right mouse button) properties, previous versions, and right there in previous versions, it appears in the last week, the July 25 the last modification.
And luckily I was able to recover a lot of information, we only missed a few days of a lot of work, but we were talking about almost three years of work.
The bak file. was, yes. But sadly it was where it didn't have to be, in Program Files-Ant Movie Catalog.
Now then, my friend, how can I prevent this problem from happening again, which is very serious for me. It has been a long time and I spend a lot of time cataloging movies, editing information, updating data, and many more things that give me great pleasure and satisfaction.
Anyway, I have to confess that I never knew how to configure the program, I am a donkey that, not knowing English, I cannot configure properly and save and safeguard and backup my files.
Could you or any of the friends on the forum, give me a brief explanation or screenshot of the program's configuration in terms of backing up files, where to save the program, where to save the catalog.
I believed that if I saved the catalog in another place, the program itself would never connect with the catalog. Also export and import catalog
Thanks friend
PS and all the colleagues on the forum who wish to help

How to avoid such problems :
- Do not store data files in program files; put your catalog files in "Documents" folder (or a subfolder there).
- From time to time, make a copy of your catalog elsewhere (USB drive, skydrive, etc. or even another folder on the computer) and check that the copy opens correctly; so you have that copy to go back to a previous point if your main version disappears/fails.
The catalog is just a regular file, like Word/Excel documents. You can copy/move it elsewhere and then open it with AMC by browsing to the right folder. It remember the last used files, but if you manually open another one then it will also remember that new location.

I really appreciate your help, but I don't understand anything about this program. I know it is so easy to configure, but I have been using it for years and I have difficulties from the beginning for not understanding, where it is installed, where the script files and templates go and then configure preferences.

I'm going to upload screenshots with my AMC settings.
But I have doubts about where the program is installed, where the catalog will stop and where the scripts and templates are.
For example, if I copy my AMC file into documents, how does it connect to the scripts? And how are program updates done?
It is also very important to export and import catalog.
Learning to use the catalog which is very good and which has helped me so much for so many years in my great passion for cinema and films and their updates, would be very good.

The catalog is not "connected" to the scripts. The scripts are more like a part of the program, but that can be more easily updated than the program itself. They are used by the program to know how to get data from website or to perform actions on the catalog.
The program is normally in "program files"
The catalog is where you save it, that's just a document file, so it is better to put it in a Documents folder.
The scripts are in "program data" if you have a recent install; on older installs they were in "program files", and so with UAC activated when they were updated the new version of the script went to the "virtual store" as the program can't modify the contents of subfolders of "program files".
