How to reimport jpg's for movies.

Post by boristhecat »

I had been altering the options for storing picture files in the catalog after losing all of my jpg's in a failed backup. I found that by exporting the catalog as an .xml file all my jpg's came back!

However they were named in the convention of movies_The Terminator.jpg.
I had since changed the option to NOT using the catalog name as the prefix, so renamed all the movies without the prefix. (Using ant renamer of course!)

So now I have a collection of over 2,000 jpg's, but they are not linked to the movies in the catalog. I can of course link them individually but this would take an enormous amount of time, so, is there a way to link the jpg's with the catalog automatically?

There are several options in Tools -> Manage Pictures.
You may find in that something that can solve the problem here.
But I'm not sure to understand what the problem is, if you got the jpeg back by exporting the amc, it means that you still have all the pictures correctly linked there, no?
Or was that a previous copy of a catalog and you want to reimport the pictures in a newer one?

I have all the jpg's back, but I renamed them to take out the prefix of the catalog name. That's when they all disappeared from each page.
I want to reimport them all back but I can only see how to do it individually

If it is in the XML file, you can open it in a text editor (e.g. notepad) and do a search-replace of what has to be removed.

:??: If you just renamed the files, you can rename the file paths in the .xml file itself too to match the new names

I don't know which xml file or what path to replace. I'm just going to start importing them one by one. It'll only take about a month grrr

A simple rule to remember to avoid this kind of problem : Never rename pictures linked in AMC by yourself. Change naming options in AMC and use Tools > Manage Pictures in AMC to apply naming options to already linked picture. This way AMC will rename pictures and change the links in catalog.
What you can do now is to restore the old name of your pictures (add movies_ before picture name if you remove it before) to restore the link in AMC. After that, change naming options for pictures and apply them to linked pictures using Tools > Manage Pictures in AMC.

:??: the xml file that you exported, that had all pictures (that you mentioned in the first post). And the path to replace is the "movie_" prefix that you removed from the file names that you also have to remove in that xml file.

About the option that you don't find, maybe it was added in the latest beta versions? I thought it was already in 4.2.0

The option exists since AMC 4.1.2 : Tools > Manage pictures... > Rename picture if it is copied in catalog folder or pictures folder.
