AMC shows unreadable characters in Original Title field

Post by the_observer »

Hi all.

i have searched around in forum about this problem but i was not lucky :(

The problem is that when i import a movie with IMDB script unreadable characters -like Chinese- are importing in my AMC (i use latest ver 4.1.2) in the field Original Title.

For example in movie Schindler's List (http://imdb.com/title/tt0108052) i get this : — ›―ΓΔ± ΔΏΕ £―½Δ»µΑ

Is there something i can do to fix it?

I suspect it has something to do with greek characters.

Thank you much for your time reading this.

Regards,
N.

Hi,
IMDB only uses basic characters so it should not cause problem.
However depending on the country the site tends to send different results.
Maybe it sends you the Greek title.
Is Greek correctly displayed in AMC fields if you try to type or copy that from elsewhere?
Which language do you use for AMC and for Windows itself?
If you open that movie page in your web browser, is the title displayed in Greek (or other non-latin characters) somewhere on the page? If so, what is it?

Hi antp and thank you for your concern.

As you say imdb sends me the Greek title i guess.

When i type Greek in AMC it shows ok.

The language for my Windows is English US (menus e.t.c.) but i can write Greek also since i have the Greek keyboard installed and i have set location to Greece.
Also most of the files with Greek open correctly. When i have problems in some files i open them changing the encoding ANSI ,utf-8 e.t.c. and it works.

I have AMC language set in English default because i prefer menus e.t.c. in English. I changed language to Greek but the problem persists and the only change was in AMC menus which became Greek something i don't prefer.
Except if there is another place in option where i can change the encoding which i have not spotted yet.

Also if you could move this post to scripts subforum as i believe it should be.

Thank you for reading this and for giving us AMC.

I am expecting your answers with anticipation.

P.S. I even installed windows Greek language pack1 but in vain. The only change now is that i can change windows menus dialogues e.t.c. in Greek.

Does it save it correctly too?
Maybe the Greek from IMDB is not properly decoded but I am not sure on what I should do to try to fix it.
Can you make a new catalog with just one movie with that strange title in it?
And also, save the corresponding IMDB page from your web browser as a simple html file.
So I can see how both are encoded.

Yes ,it saves and loads correctly when i manually type the field.
And also, save the corresponding IMDB page from your web browser as a simple HTML file
This worked ok.Greek show ok.

Yes ,i already testing with new catalog from the start of our posts.

Now i would like to mention something possibly wrong cause i am newbie with this stuff so please forgive.

Some years before i had this error when i was trying to migrate a database to another system. The problem then was that the old db was collation Latin_1 while the new was utf8_general_ci so during the migration was becoming Chinese like now.Another good person was helping me there too :)
Maybe this gives you some hint i hope.

Thank you again for your time and excuse my lame English.

Sorry I forgot a part in my message.
When I said:

I wanted to add "and send me these files by e-mail" :D (catalog + html)

Hi antp.

I have sent you the requested files which are:

-A save of the webpage showing the name of a movie (Schindler's List) as it saves in my PC which Greek shows correctly
-A save of one movie catalog named one.movie.downloaded.chinese.original.title.amc which has the Chinese characters which happen when amc downloads the movie.
-A save of one movie catalog named one.movie.typed.by.me.correct.original.title which has the correct title when i type it in Greek characters and save the catalog

I used the email that i found from amc site

In case this is not correct you can download the above mentioned files from here : www.top-greek-hotels.gr/!Various/Catalogs.rar

Thank you much.

That's from the URL, it will work without the URL tags, though the URLK appears broken then. I don't know why, but the forum does not correctly handle the exclamation mark behind a slash (or maybe the exclamation mark used within a URL in general). ;)

phpBB has lots of strange bugs like that :D
(btw I removed the e-mail link, for spam I guess it is better to avoid that)

I didn't had time to check that yesterday, I'll do it later as soon as I have a few minutes for it.
