Allmovie script error

Post by Boojess30 »

when searching for a title it immediately pops http/1.1 404NotFound
then Allmovie error while reading selection page (id page=")
Is there a way to make this script work again? The site is still there and was my fav for movie info...thanks, Jess

Probably. Someone "just" has to fix it to match the changes done on the site...

I agree completely with the value of AllMovie as a source - it shines. I don't want to read reviews by teenagers who only like horror, Kung Fu and soft porn.

At the bottom of the script is the names of those who wrote/developed it, but no e-mail address so we can politely ask them for help/reworking of a script which is malfunctioning.

Hopefully, they will drop by occasionally and see there's a problem.

ANTOINE!! Thank you for a wonderful application from the thousands of happy users!

I'm trying to fix it

Post by Raoul_Volfoni »

First of all, sorry for my terrible english. :(

About All Movie Guide (0.4.1 version), i work on it for you guys ;) ... but there are many changes to fix (Almost everything, in fact :/). And it's quiet hard for me because i've never used this script before and i've never seen the site before it change. So i've almost finish (3 things to change) but i've some questions for users about the script and the site.

- There is the possibility to "Import Moods into Producer Field" in the third option of "ProduceurOptions". Could anyone send me a title of a movie whith "Moods" on the AMG page ?

- I have a problem with the category field. Could anyone show me how it was filled ? Seems to be with "Genres" and "Types" together, but now it's separate on the site.

- The "Award" part of the script is a tricky one to fix. Could anyone show me how it was formated on the AMC form.

Like i already said i've almost finish and when it will done, i'll post a private message to some of you to give an adress to dowload a beta version of the script, in order you test it before i release it officially and send it to Antoine.

You may also seek assistance from the original authors, Hubert Kosior, KaraGarga and Chetan Rao for repairing the All Movie Guide (pic).ifs script ;)

About the category field:

Similarily, for Titanic I have

Epic, Romance, Romantic Epic, Disaster Film, Period Film, Sea Adventure

which IS indeed Genres + Types, but I have no real idea whether these were a single category in the previous version of AMG or already separated.

If that helps, an older version of the AMG script I used about 2-3 years ago already used this combination and even had additional stuff there.
(for Shrek http://www.allmovie.com/work/shrek-242627 I have

Fantasy, Comedy, Children's/Family, Fantasy Comedy, Fairy Tale, Children's Fantasy

while the latest version of the AMG script has

Children's/Family, Fantasy Comedy, Fairy Tales & Legends, Children's Fantasy

so I guess it's Genres + Types now.

About Moods... well,

In my Producer field actually never got anything else than what's listed at ProducerOptions 0, the field "Produced by" -- never got anything about themes or tones them. Frankly, I couldn't find so far any movie having a Mood field, so I wonder whether that field isn't now part of "Tones", as tones and moods are somewhat similar.

I hope this might help you a bit -- I'm basing my catalog mostly on AMG, with info from IMDB and TV.com manually rechecked/added, also, movie poster image oftenly made from multiple posters/DVD covers of the same movie. :)

As far as I remember, the Genres and Types fields on AMG web pages were separated before too, so in the script they were somehow "combined" I think.

I've noticed that a significant modification on the Allmovie.com site is the new structure based in this moment upon 3 distinctive categories, namely Artist, Work and DVD, and this change is reflected also in the URL itself.

Right now, a dedicated page to a person (actor, producer, director etc.) is reshaped like this:

http://www.allmovie.com/artist/name-IDnumber
- see example for Arnold Schwarzenegger:
http://www.allmovie.com/artist/arnold-s ... ger-110501

a dedicated page to a movie (as theatrical motion picture release) looks like this:

http://www.allmovie.com/work/title-IDnumber
- see example for The Terminator (1984):
http://www.allmovie.com/work/the-terminator-49101

and a dedicated page to a media release (Blu-Ray, DVD, VHS, Special Edition etc.) of a movie is now looking like this:

http://www.allmovie.com/dvd/title-format-IDnumber
- see examples for The Terminator (1984):
http://www.allmovie.com/dvd/terminator-ws-192741
http://www.allmovie.com/dvd/terminator-umd-80986
http://www.allmovie.com/dvd/terminator-blu-ray-93479
http://www.allmovie.com/dvd/terminator- ... tion-19286
http://www.allmovie.com/dvd/terminator- ... ion-132831

Hope that this info will be of some help!

To anglarite

Thanks a lot for you're research work. It's going to help me a lot.

- About the awards, i think the way it was formated is going to change.

- About the Category, i've already fix it with "Genres + Types" except for the first "CategoryOptions" named "Only import first category" that i've just "filled" it with Genres.

- About Moods ... I don't know what to do ... deleting this option ? what do you think ?

I've noticed too ;)
I've already based my search results on the work categorie.
Thanks

To all

So now it's the last step before i send you a beta version ...
I just have to fix the "award" part and i'll see the "moods" option later ... i'ts not very important ... i guess. Let's go to work, and thanks again to all of you.

[Edit]
Ok it's done !! :)
Boojess30, MaxIsBack, Lapin22, Khaeotica, anglarite, please check your private message if you want to test the beta version.
I hope you'll give me some good feedback ...

Well, while testing it, accidentally I did stumbled over a movie which has a Moods field: For a Few Dollars More

http://www.allmovie.com/work/for-a-few- ... more-18148

Also, some notes:

Actors field:
your script gives for example Clint Eastwood...The Man With No Name
previous script gave Clint Eastwood ... The Man With No Name
(spaces on both sides of the "...")
Comments/PRODUCTION CREDITS:
your script gives for example Sergio Leone...Director / Screenwriter
previous script gave Sergio Leone - Director / Screenwriter
(" - " instead of "...")
(NOTE: Changing "CreditsOptions" to 1 solved this making it Sergio Leone-Director / Screenwriter, so now it's "-" instead of the usual " - ")

NOTE: I can live with those, though, but if you feel like changing it, go ahead.

Further notes follow, once I'll be at my home 'puter and can doublecheck them.

- You must choose the 1st "CreditsOptions" for that. Choose "Import Credits as a list (like AMG)" instead of "Import Credits as a list (like IMDB)"
Still the "spaces on both sides" problem but i've fixed it now.

So, I did the testing with the movies Zorba The Greek ( http://www.allmovie.com/work/zorba-the-greek-56204 ) and Zodiac ( http://www.allmovie.com/work/zodiac-325574 ) and there are some bugs:

- in the Category field there's nothing imported (before they were taken both from the Genre and Types areas from Allmovie.com)
- in the Country field only the first country (in this case, UK) appears, and the others not (in this case, Greece)
- in the Translated Title field the second name is "united" with the third, like this: Alexis ZorbasZormba

With the movie Zodiac, the translated name was imported correctly, and also the Category was filled correctly.

Other differences (but not bugs):
- before, in the Actors field, the format was Anthony Quinn - Alexis Zorba and now it's Anthony Quinn...Alexis Zorba. The same goes for the PRODUCTION CREDITS in the Comments field in ANT program.

Regarding the AWARDS display in the Comments field, the elements look now quite differently listed. With your script they are displayed like this (for the movie Zodiac, as an example, but the same is for the Zorba The Greek movie):

AWARDS:

-=[ Cannes Film Festival ]=-
- In Competition 2007

-=[ Chicago Film Critics Association ]=-

nom - Best Adapted Screenplay: James Vanderbilt 2007
nom - Best Director: David Fincher 2007

-=[ Detroit Film Critics Society ]=-

nom - Best Ensemble 2007

-=[ Golden Satellite Award ]=-

nom - Best Adapted Screenplay: James Vanderbilt 2007
nom - Best Supporting Actor: Brian Cox 2007

-=[ Las Vegas Film Critics Association ]=-

nom - Best Picture 2007

-=[ Oklahoma Film Critics Circle ]=-

nom - Best Picture 2007

-=[ Southeastern Film Critics Association ]=-

nom - Best Picture 2007

-=[ Toronto Film Critics Association ]=-

nom - Best Director: David Fincher 2007
nom - Best Picture 2007

and before they were listed like this:

AWARDS:
Best Adapted Screenplay (nom) - James Vanderbilt - 2007 - Chicago Film Critics Association
Best Director (nom) - David Fincher - 2007 - Chicago Film Critics Association
Best Ensemble (nom) - - 2007 - Detroit Film Critics Society
Best Adapted Screenplay (nom) - James Vanderbilt - 2007 - Golden Satellite Award
Best Supporting Actor (nom) - Brian Cox - 2007 - Golden Satellite Award
Best Picture (nom) - - 2007 - Las Vegas Film Critics
Best Picture (nom) - - 2007 - Oklahoma Film Critics
Best Picture (nom) - - 2007 - Southeastern Film Critics Award
Best Director (nom) - David Fincher - 2007 - Toronto Film Critics
Best Picture (nom) - - 2007 - Toronto Film Critics
Best Adapted Screenplay (nom) - James Vanderbilt - 2007 - Writers Guild of America

Some small suggestion:
- for the signatures from Comments and Description you can add the particle "by" as in this example: -- by Hal Erickson, and not just simple as it is now: -- Hal Erickson
- for the Category field in ANT program you can also add alongside the Genres and Types, I suppose, the elements introduced in the specific area called Category that AMG website has.
- don't you think that it would be a much better idea for the Ratings to reflect the actual rate that Allmovie uses (from a scale between 0 to 5 stars), and not a transcription of their numbers into the IMDb.com scale of 0 to 10 points? I know that the ANT program has that / 10 for the Rating field, but this can be modified and anyway for the PK's MovieDB template that many use for their websites it would be a much better choice!

By the way, it's a good choice that you've added the director near the movie title name and year during the search/add, that's very helpful for entries that has the same title (remakes etc.)! The older version didn't have this feature.
Another good choice from you is the option for Producer field to be filled with the Produced by and not Released by (even though sometimes they coincide, as in the Zodiac movie) entries from AMG!
Also, very good choice to settle for the elements imported in the ANT fields to be separated by commas and not slashes as before, it is very useful for a good display for those who use the PK's MovieDB template for a web presentation of their collections, me included :D - see my own list of movies that I've seen so far here: http://cine.khaeotica.com

I hope that my insights will help you perfect this script even much more ;)

Same answer i gave to anglarite ... you must use the options for that.
- Choose "Import Cast as a list (AMG Default)" in CastOptions
- Choose "Import Credits as a list (Like AMG)" in CreditsOptions
And you will have '-' instead of '...'

About the "Award" part i've already awarded that it will not formated like before. (Due to the site)
Khaeotica wrote:for the signatures from Comments and Description you can add the particle "by" as in this example: -- by Hal Erickson, and not just simple as it is now: -- Hal Erickson
I can do that easily
Khaeotica wrote:- for the Category field in ANT program you can also add alongside the Genres and Types, I suppose, the elements introduced in the specific area called Category that AMG website has.
Let me first debug the category part ... will see that after
Khaeotica wrote:- don't you think that it would be a much better idea for the Ratings to reflect the actual rate that Allmovie uses (from a scale between 0 to 5 stars), and not a transcription of their numbers into the IMDb.com scale of 0 to 10 points? - Well ... the original script was design like that ("// Rating (multiplied by 2, because 0 <= AMG rating <= 5)" commentary of original author in the script) ... and i'm not sure about the possibility to modified the Rating field of the Amc program ... unless modified the program itself ... which is out of my range ;)
What i can do is to include another option to have choice between actual AMG rate or multiplied by 2.
If the movie have 5 stars on AMG, you're going to have ( 5 / 10 ) or ( 10 / 10 ) in AMC RatingField depending of the option you choose. Very confusing i think.

It also seems there is a general problem with non-english characters. For example, the cast of 1492 (http://www.allmovie.com/work/1492-conqu ... se-48/cast) ends up as "Gérard Depardieu" or "Ã￾ngela Molina" instead of "Gérard Depardieu" and "Ángela Molina". I'd met these kind of problems in the actors and translated title fields, but I guess they might be codepage-related, as if I do a direct copy/paste they can be put properly in the DB.

The "signature" at the end of synopses and reviews you have, for example, "Vassilis Fotopoulos. -- Hal Erickson" So far it was similar, except having a single space between the dot and "--" and not two.
(just nitpicking here)

Another small difference is how in the cast list actors whose role isn't known are threated. The old script had only the name of the actor listed and nothing more. Your script has the name of the actor, then "...?". Which technically, isn't a problem and I think I even find it more appropriate.

Thanks, I added it to my server.
But Raoul_Volfoni was already working on a version.
Did you fix everything? Maybe it could be useful that both of you compare your scripts to check if maybe one can take some things from the other.

Didn't know someone was working on it when I started. By posting it now, I thought I'd avoid someone else duplicating my work.

My script fills just about field the old one did with most of the options except I took out most of the options for the "producer" field (couldn't find all the previous info on the new AMG site).

The one thing the old script did that mine doesn't is search for cast members, not just movie names. (EG the old one would fill the picktree with movies by that star if you entered his/her name in the search box.) I can't immediately think of an easy way to accomplish this with the new site. If anyone has any ideas or wants to work on this, they are welcome to.

Since I just finished this script today, there may be glitches in specific pages. If anyone notices any of these, send me the name of the movie plus a description of your error and I'll see if I can/need to revise the script. Bear in mind that the amg site itself has been a little glitchy in the last day or two.

Just to let every1 know, I added that script and it works fine when making brand new entries but craps out when trying to replace existing entries (i.e. from IMDB).
