There si a bug with duration reporting for large avi files
I did some testing and found that duration is only reported for the first 2 GB of file, rest is just ingored.

This was fixed in version 3.5 or one of the later versions, but it may still occur if you use the internal engine instead of MovieInfo for AVI importation. You can change that behaviour in the Preferences window, on "Media file importation" page.
