I want to change the default pictures with 4 stars for others which goes from 0 to 10 stars. I rename the new pictures to appr0.gif ... appr10.gif but now i need to assign ratings to the pictures...how can i do it?

I am not sure that I understand your question
If you have 11 files (appr0 to appr11) then you can do this :
<img src="appr$$ITEM_RATING.gif">
