Ant Renamer 2.12 a few of my favorite bugs

Post by Edawen »

I had bought a file renamer program years ago and when i upgraded my pc I found that it and the website had gone away. I found this program and it has a lot of the features I am used to, but it has a few problems and I have only used it for a hour. I am not going to register and donate to it since it is no longer being updated but i thought i would report the problems i found, just in case no one else had found them in 10 years.

1) There is the folder handling bug that was recently posted about.

2) Actions -> Enumeration, "%folder/V%" doesn't insert a folder name, but I am not sure the /V is supposed to the there. I have tried "%folder/V%" and "%folder%" and can't get the folder name to insert into the string.

3) Help is empty. it comes up, but there is nothing there besides the headers. is this a windows problem?

4) Multiple String Replacement Allows me to save sets, but it does not seem to work. I'ts a great feature. I added all the replacement sets to fix a replacement string and saved it, but when i reloaded the program and wen to use it, i could find the set name I had saved and it was not in the .XML file in the programs execution folder.

5) Not a bug, but String Insertion could benefit from allowing the user to click on an area to specify where they want the string to insert instead of the position control. The same with Character Deletion.

6) I am afraid to try the MP3 tag functions. It was several operations before I realized my folder names were damaged and I don't want to damage my MP3 data and not know about it for several years.

I'm sorry, but you have released a program with glaring problems, left it uncorrected and collected money from it. I just don't trust the program or the programmer.

Good luck with Ant Renamer, I hope you choose to updated it one day. It's a nice program and has some great features.

Regards. Edawen.

1 - By folder handling, you mean with folders that include dots in their name?
That one is solved in the upcoming version 2.13: https://forum.antp.be/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?t=42592

2 - It is actually %folderN% with the N written in italics, but I see that indeed it is not clear at all (could look like a /V), especially without explanation of the N... I'll update that. The N is the level of the folder: 1 = file's folder, 2 = parent folder, 3 = parent of parent, etc.

3 - For the Help, do you have it on a local drive or on a network drive? I know that Windows does not allow CHM files to display contents from "unsafe" locations, which include network drives.

4 - By default the xml file is in ProgramData as the program does not have rights to write to Program Files. If you used the portable version, it is in the program folder, but you have to ensure that it can write there.

5 - Indeed, it could be useful

6 - It does not touch to the mp3 info, it just reads it to rename the file.

The few problems are quite minor, and except the issue with dots in the folder name there were no blocking/dangerous bugs. The preview features allow to verify that all works as intended before actually changing things.
When you say that I collected money, it is a free program, source code is published, anyone can check what is in it. I don't ask for money, the donation link is on the site just because some people ask if they can donate something, and many are happy with that program.
