Template for dynamic web page view v3.0 - Testers required

Post by bonienl »

I have issued now the official version 3 and removed the test version

I have been working on a new version of my dynamic template and made some additions which require more testing before going official.

Let me start with stating what is new in version 3:

• Possibility to play files locally on your PC (Internet Explorer only)
• Possibility to start playing files remotely on Dune media player
• New field in settings to select desired player
• Player settings section in ‘locale.xml’ file
• Frameless design using CSS styles, single HTML file
• Support of displaying content on mobile phones (auto detection)
• Header translations in ‘locale.xml’ (no more need to edit source HTML file)
• Remote control for Dune media player
• Updated video and audio images
• Large and small flag sizes included
• Updated layout files to reflect new possibilities (not compatible with v2)
• Latest versions of 3D scripts from Christian Effenberger included

Specially for the newly introduced "play" and "mobile" functions I like to get some feedback.

I own a Dune media player and I have set up the web page as such that I can make a film selection from either my laptop of smartphone (android) to play on my tv screen.

Another feature I introduced to my family members is the ability to play a movie locally on their PC. Each of my kids can go to the web site, select their movie of choice and play it on their own computer. All this is possible because my film collection is kept on a NAS server.

The instructions how to do all this can be found in the help folder. For convenience sake I have included the original help file as well, but if you are not familiar with my template it could be all quite challenging :/

Let me know if the explanations make sense and you are able to get playback up and running, either on your PC or - if you own one - Dune media player (it does require the latest test firmware, which is not officially released yet but available nevertheless).

For those trying mobile phones, it might require to change the browser settings on your phone. In my case I needed to enable "mobile view" to get things working.

The test version can be downloaded <see official version>

And a preview is available <see official version>

Btw for the paranoid: the play function is restricted to a local home network only.

Hello bonienl
I'm your man :grinking:
I'm searching for a simple and good html template.
First of all, it only works on ie, not on firefox.

Awesome! For me, it works on Firefox (http://www.bergware.com/amc/movielist-v3-test/). I couldn't test the "play" and "mobile" functions, yet. I'm gonna test it soon local aswell, so....

OK that solved the pb.
I'll continue testing on ie.

Could you add in settings the possibility to choose thumb image size ?

In this view, i have not the same result for movie's sheets. Sometimes i've got all the informations, sometimes only the right part (comments ..).

I've check the xml files, it's not the pb.

Elrigolo, thanks for testing :)

The thumb image size can be changed in the layout.xml files. These files define the format of display and you may adapt them to your own needs.

One thing to check first is to see if your source XML file can be loaded properly by the browser. You can do this by opening the source file (movies.xml) directly in the browser itself. If something does not work your browser reports a problem, which usually is a not accepted "foreign" character, this is best replaced by a space.

I tried it out and it works! ;)

But why is your templates showing the translated titles instead of the original ones?

Thanks for your efforts, expect some more feedback soon..

The layout of the template can be controlled via XML. By default it will take the file "layout1.xml".

In this file you can adjust how movie titles are displayed. It looks like this:

Code: Select all

<text style="bold">merge(movie.getAttribute('OriginalTitle'),': ',movie.getAttribute('TranslatedTitle'))</text>
And you may change it to the folllowing (as an example):

Code: Select all

<text style="bold">movie.getAttribute('FormattedTitle')</text>

Thanks bonie, it worked!

What's not working is the Popup layout, and the List layout. The movies don't get loaded, there's only the blue background under the genres, and if I go there with the mouse it shows me the loading cursor, nothing happens...

EDIT: The Popup & List layout is working on your homepage, therefore I wonder what's the fault here...
EDIT2: I opened the Error Console in Firefox and when I select the List layout, it shows me
Error: text.linefeed is not a function
Source File: file:///C:/Voila/xampp/htdocs/template/movies.js
Line: 1029
When I select the Popup layout, I get this:
Error: text.linefeed is not a function
Source File: file:///C:/Voila/xampp/htdocs/template/movies.js
Line: 1027

The problems with popup and list view are known and I have made a correction.

If you download the zip of the OP again, you will get the latest version.

Create a new folder and upzip the file to get a up to date program. If you have made changes to the XML layout files, then you'll need to redo them (do not copy files over from the previous download).

First problem:
I have a problem with sorting (on 'title').

Some movie titles appear after the 'Z'

e.g. Apocalypto
300
Meet the Robinsons

I can't find anything unusual in the movies.xml file...
-----------------------------------------------------------------
edit 27/1 18:45:
Found a workaround for the sorting problem:

The sorting algorithm gets somehow confused when the movie
is only a number like the movie 300 and 2012.
If i rename '300' to '300 prepare for glory' and
if i rename '2012' to '2012 we were warned' sorting goes ok!!!
------------------------------------------------------------------

Second problem:
in popup mode, popup works initially, but when i scroll down to anything below the screen, popups don't work anymore.

This is a known behaviour, due to the way the sorting routine is written it will treat numbers differently.

As you already indicated the workaround is to extend the title to a "no number".

Which browser are you using? Placement of the popup window differs per browser (i.e. Explorer, Firefox, Chrome).

@bonienl:

i am using firefox 3.6.13, but problem is also in IE8

I noticed that the lower you get on the screen the higher the popups go. At
a certain point the popups disappear.

btw: I have set the titles per page to 999

The problem is not visible in version2 of your application.

I have a big movie list, 1.26MB, and Safari can't load it. I tested through http://www.spoon.net/browsers/ because my friend reported not being able to load the page. I originally had version 1.2 of the template, but updating didn't make any difference, so the reason is the size of the XML.

Thanks for spotting this :)

In version 2 the page is built using frames while version 3 uses CSS codes. The main reason to change the page build is support for mobile phones and some simplifications.

The popup window becomes misplaced when scrolling of the page happens, it requires a rewrite of the positioning routines. Unfortunately browsers do not make life easier because everyone has its own interpretation...

The workaround for the time being is to limit the number of titles per page and prevent scrolling. :o

The size of the XML is not relevant for a successful loading of the page. It is more likely that the content of the XML file is not accepted by the browser. This usually happens due to 'foreign' characters being present. Open the XML file directly in your browser and observe the error message(s), it contains a reference to the offending characters, replace these with a space (or other suitable character) in the XML file itself, any text editor can do.

Thanks for the explanation, it makes sense. But I only got a white screen when I loaded it directly and so did my friend. I already told him to install Firefox :). I consider Safari to be the offending one here, heh!
