I used to use excel and for making a list of all the movies, where I had a system with movie number (numeric), then movie catalog number (alpha numeric) and movie name and information.
The movie catalog numbers is based on
1. media type e.g. DVD
2. year the movie was purchased, e.g. 03, 04
